The Indian National Congress (INC) has retained Thuravoor Ward 1 in the 2025 Local Body General Election, with Vatsala Prakashan emerging victorious in a four-cornered contest. She secured 651 votes, defeating CPI(M) candidate Budhansya, who polled 432 votes. BJP candidate Sethu Shaji finished third with 36 votes, while Kerala Congress (Jacob) candidate Vijay Kumar received 20 votes.
As per the latest electoral roll, the ward has 1,463 registered voters. The election attracted considerable attention due to the strong presence of experienced candidates and significant female representation.
The winner, Vatsala Prakashan (61), is a resident of Nampoorithara, Pallithode. She holds a Pre-Degree qualification from St. Michael’s College, Cherthala, and is self-employed. Her long-standing engagement with the local community and emphasis on welfare-oriented governance resonated strongly with voters in this coastal ward.
The ward witnessed a competitive race from CPI(M) candidate Budhansya (60) of Kalathil, who focused her campaign on social justice, public welfare, and grassroots development. Kerala Congress (Jacob) candidate Vijay Kumar (51) and BJP candidate Sethu Shaji (53) added further diversity to the contest with development-centric and administrative reform agendas.
Thuravoor Ward 1 has seen alternating political representation over the years. In 2010, the ward was represented by Valsala Prakashan of the INC under SC women’s reservation. The 2015 term saw Jain Earnest of CPI(M) elected as Vice President, followed by Vimala Johnson of the INC in 2020, when the seat was again reserved for women. The 2025 result continues the Congress presence in the ward.
Being a seaside ward, Thuravoor faces issues related to coastal livelihoods, housing, sanitation, and infrastructure. With a strong mandate, expectations are high that the newly elected member will prioritize community welfare, women’s empowerment, and sustainable development tailored to coastal needs.
